I was walking down the Midosuji when I noticed on the lamp-posts some QR Codes. QR codes are 2D barcodes which most recent Japanese mobile phones can read. They can contain various info such as telephone numbers, email addresses or links to web sites.
2D Barcodes
The ones on the lamp-posts linked to a web site made for mobile phones. Each lamp-post had a slightly different bar-code so linked to a different page on the site. On the page there was info on where you were, where the nearest station was and links to timetables of the trains. There is probably some other info but my Japanese isn’t that great. [update: thanks to http://mobile.kaywa.com/ here's the site the barcode links to: http://mmnavi.jp/mido/html/light/r25-36-6-21.html]

That is such a cool use of the technology, and it would be great to see it in other places in the city. It would also be great if it was available in different languages but that is probably asking way too much.

Ive tried making one when i was in Japan to use on my business card, unfortunately i couldnt do it. Very handy indeed, but as I know now Dutch phones definitely cant recognize this yet, let alone the world….
