Sakura Blossoms

The cherry blossom (sakura) 桜 season is almost upon us and if you are looking to view the spectacular coverage and many different kinds of blossom, you should visit the Osaka Mint. It is not too far which is great if you have small kids. Also quite a few varieties are late blossoming kinds so if you are late in catching the blooms, or you have friends visiting but not quite in time for the first regular blossoms, it may be ideal.

The Mint’s gardens are opened up to the public for a week, this year’s (2007) dates are 5th April until 11th April. Every year they have a cherry blossom of the year, this year’s one is called Shogatsu (松月). Opening times are 10am to 9pm weekdays and 9am to 9pm weekdays.

To get to the Mint, travel to Temmabashi Station (T22) on the Tanimachi subway line (Purple) and follow the signs and crowds.

The mint has a good English section with info, but unfortunately not the map (can’t understand why not).
